Years ago, I unknowingly created a sacred space in my home. I had a small collection of mementos on a bookshelf in my home office, built up over a few months during a stressful period. At the time, I was overwhelmed with work, finishing the final year of my part-time degree, and feeling pretty low in general.
The items included a small metal owl (the symbol of Athena), a photo of my childhood dog Bonnie, a mini Ganesha statue from India, and a Sugar Skull I bought in Mexico during my yoga teacher training. These objects brought me warmth, calm, hope, joy, and love as I sat at my desk, struggling to finish my assignments.
It took time for me to realise that what I had created wasn’t just a display - it was a sacred space in the form of a home altar.
Home altars ground us. When you create a sacred space where you can be fully present, just as you are, you give yourself a place of non-judgement, hope, and refuge. It's a simple but impactful way to support your well-being.
Entering your 40s and 50s often brings big shifts - physically, emotionally, and spiritually. This is the perfect time to carve out a space in your home to reconnect with yourself, reflect on your journey, and set intentions for the future. Whether you're navigating a new phase of life, feeling overwhelmed, or seeking more peace and clarity, a home altar can become your grounding sanctuary.
A home altar isn’t just for spiritual purposes; it's about giving yourself a dedicated space where you can feel calm, centred and focused. Think of it as your personal oasis - a space to recharge, reflect, and reset.
Intentional Living: An altar encourages you to slow down, reflect on your intentions, and live with more purpose. With busy lives, it’s easy to lose track of what matters. A dedicated space to pause and reconnect can make all the difference.
Emotional Grounding: Life’s pressures, family responsibilities, or personal health can pull us in many directions. A home altar serves as a sanctuary where you can breathe, meditate, or journal.
Spiritual Connection: If you feel disconnected or adrift, a home altar helps you reconnect with your inner self, the universe, or any spiritual energy that resonates with you. It becomes a space where you can focus on spiritual growth and seek deeper meaning.
Creating a home altar doesn’t need to be complicated. The key is that it reflects you - your desires, intentions, and values. Follow these simple steps to get started:
Choose a Spot: This could be a small table, windowsill, or even a corner in your room. The important thing is to find a spot that feels right and dedicated to this purpose.
Gather Meaningful Items: Include candles for clarity, crystals for energy, flowers for renewal, or personal symbols that hold meaning for you. Your altar is personal, so there’s no right or wrong way to build it.
Set Your Intention: Every time you approach your altar, pause to set an intention. It could be for peace, gratitude, healing, or clarity. Let it serve as a reminder of what you’re inviting into your life.
While creating an altar is simple, the process can sometimes feel overwhelming. If you've never created one before, you might feel unsure about what to include or how to set meaningful intentions. Many women love the idea of a sacred space, but the practical steps can feel unclear.
That’s where my Home Altar Workbook comes in. It guides you through each step, ensuring the process feels easy and aligned with your personal needs. With thoughtful prompts and clear instructions, the workbook takes away the guesswork.
Once your altar is created, it becomes more than just a decorative space. It’s a place you can return to every day to centre yourself, set intentions, and practice gratitude. Spending just a few minutes at your sacred space in the morning can shift your mindset, making you feel more grounded and focused as you go about your day.
Here’s a tip: your altar doesn’t have to stay the same. As your intentions and needs evolve, so can your altar. You can update it with seasonal elements, new crystals, or even adapt it to your current spiritual practice. It’s a reflection of your journey - constantly evolving, just like you.
